Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal held a telephone conversation with Portugal’s Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel on 1 April 2026. During the call, Minister Khanal requested Portugal to review the status of more than 2,000 Nepali nationals facing procedural and legal difficulties in Portugal.
The issue relates to fake stamps allegedly placed on genuine documents, especially Police Clearance Certificates, said to have been attested by the Portuguese and Nepali embassies in New Delhi. Minister Rangel appreciated the contribution of the Nepali community to Portugal’s economy and assured that he would raise the matter with concerned agencies using a humane approach.
The two ministers also discussed Nepal-Portugal relations and expressed commitment to expand cooperation in hydropower, agriculture, tourism, infrastructure development and information technology.
