Share

Summary:

The Ministry of Education and Sports has instructed all Education Development and Coordination Units to facilitate school safety measures, examination postponements and emergency shelter arrangements following warnings of heavy rainfall, floods and landslides.

The Government of Nepal has directed all Education Development and Coordination Units across the country to coordinate and facilitate precautionary measures in educational institutions following forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall on Ashoj 9, 10 and 11, 2083 BS. According to an official circular issued by the Ministry of Education and Sports on Ashoj 7, 2083 BS, information received from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority and other concerned agencies indicates increased risks of floods, landslides, inundation and river erosion. The ministry warned that the anticipated weather conditions could disrupt road transportation, air services, electricity and communication networks, particularly in mountainous and Himalayan regions.

To minimize risks to students and education personnel, the ministry has requested local governments to arrange school holidays on Ashoj 8 and 9, 2083 BS, according to local conditions, while universities and examination authorities have been urged to postpone examinations scheduled between Ashoj 9 and 11, 2083 BS, where necessary. Local authorities have also been asked to coordinate the temporary use of safe school buildings as emergency shelters. Additionally, parents and guardians have been advised to prevent children from visiting rivers, streams, ponds and areas vulnerable to landslides.

The circular specifically instructs Education Development and Coordination Units to coordinate with local governments, educational institutions, teachers, students, parents and other stakeholders to implement these safety measures. Copies were forwarded to the Department of Education and all local governments for information and necessary cooperation. The directive emphasizes precautionary coordination rather than announcing an unconditional nationwide closure of schools or cancellation of examinations.
