The National Inclusion Commission has launched a process to update and verify the official list of surnames falling under the Khas Arya category. The commission has circulated instructions through the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration, asking municipalities and rural municipalities across the country to support the review.
The commission said it has already prepared a list of hundreds of Khas Arya surnames—including surnames associated with communities such as Brahmin, Kshetri, Thakuri, Sanyasi and Rajput—based on constitutional and legal provisions and earlier study and verification work. It has now asked local levels to identify surnames that may have been omitted from the existing list.
Local governments have been instructed to collect applications from individuals or communities claiming that their surname has been left out and forward the cases with a formal recommendation from the municipal or rural municipal executive. The required details must be submitted to the commission within 21 days of the notice.
The exercise is intended to make the Khas Arya surname classification more accurate and inclusive by incorporating verified local-level information before further recommendations are made to the Government of Nepal.
