Summary:

The Ministry of Education and Sports has issued a nationwide school safety advisory following forecasts of heavy rainfall, urging local governments to close schools when necessary, reschedule examinations and protect students from floods and landslides.

The Government of Nepal has issued a public safety advisory to educational institutions across the country following forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall on Ashoj 9, 10 and 11, 2083 BS. In a notice dated Ashoj 7, 2083 BS, the Ministry of Education and Sports warned that the anticipated rainfall could trigger floods, landslides and soil erosion, particularly in mountainous and Himalayan regions. Citing information from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority and other relevant agencies, the ministry highlighted potential disruptions to road transportation, air travel, electricity and communication services. It urged educational institutions, teachers, students, parents and local authorities to take necessary precautions during the high-risk period.

The ministry has outlined four key safety measures, including allowing concerned local governments to declare school holidays on Ashoj 8 and 9, 2083 BS, according to local risk conditions, to ensure the safety of students, teachers and staff. Schools and universities have been instructed to postpone examinations scheduled between Ashoj 9 and 11, 2083 BS, as necessary. Local governments have also been requested to coordinate arrangements for temporarily using safe school buildings as emergency shelters when required. Additionally, parents and guardians have been advised not to allow children to visit rivers, streams, ponds or areas vulnerable to landslides. The ministry emphasized that these precautionary measures are intended to minimize disaster risks and safeguard students and educational communities during the forecast period.
