Nepal Seeks Local-Level Data on Consumer Protection and Market Monitoring

Share

Summary:

The federal government has asked municipalities and rural municipalities to provide detailed information on consumer protection mechanisms and local market monitoring committees formed under the Consumer Protection Act, 2075.

The Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration has circulated a request from the National Human Rights Commission seeking information from all local governments on the implementation of consumer protection provisions. The move is part of a study being conducted by the commission on how effectively consumer rights are being protected and promoted at the local level.

Local governments have been asked to report on the formation and functioning of consumer protection and market monitoring committees, including their activities, decisions, meeting frequency and overall effectiveness. The information sought also covers local policies, programmes and institutional arrangements related to consumer rights, market regulation and complaint handling.

The commission is examining how local mechanisms established under the Consumer Protection Act, 2075 are working in practice and whether they are contributing to the protection of consumers from unfair trade practices, poor-quality goods and services, and other market-related problems. Municipalities and rural municipalities have been requested to submit the required details to support this assessment.

The initiative is intended to identify implementation gaps, strengthen accountability and improve coordination between local governments and relevant agencies so that consumer protection laws are more effectively enforced across the country.
