Government Launches Three-Month Dengue Awareness Campaign Across All 753 Local Levels

Share

Summary:

Nepal has directed all local governments to run an intensive dengue prevention and awareness campaign during Shrawan, Bhadra and Ashwin, focusing on mosquito breeding-site destruction, public education, school participation and community mobilization.

The Ministry of Health and Food Hygiene has instructed all 753 local levels to continue a three-month dengue awareness and control campaign in FY 2083/84, with coordination among ward offices, health institutions, schools, community organizations and other stakeholders. The campaign is designed to reduce dengue transmission by increasing public awareness and encouraging communities to actively identify and eliminate mosquito breeding sites. The Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration forwarded the instruction to all municipalities and rural municipalities on 2083/03/26 for implementation.

A central activity will be the “Every Friday, Clean Friday” campaign, under which government offices, schools, social organizations and communities are encouraged to clean their premises and surrounding areas and remove stagnant water and other mosquito-breeding sources. Local governments have also been asked to coordinate with ward offices, community groups, civil society and relevant agencies to conduct regular “search and destroy” activities, while monitoring high-risk locations such as tyre workshops and garages, scrap-storage areas, construction sites, water-storage containers and other places where mosquitoes can breed.

The campaign calls for extensive public education through posters, banners, community discussions, orientation programmes, radio jingles and messages in local languages. Health mothers’ groups, youth clubs, teachers, volunteers and university and college students are to be mobilized in dengue-control activities. Schools are also encouraged to conduct peer-education programmes, sanitation campaigns, regular cleanliness monitoring and competitions such as speech, quiz and drawing events to build awareness among students.

Hotels, industries and private-sector associations are also asked to support dengue awareness through digital boards and other public-information activities. Communities should be informed about dengue warning signs and advised to seek timely medical attention, while information about available health support should be widely circulated. The campaign emphasizes coordinated action between health and non-health sectors to sustain prevention efforts throughout the three-month high-risk period.
