Nepal Reaffirms Lipulekh as Its Territory Amid India-China Kailash Mansarovar Route Plan

Summary:

Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reiterated that Lipulekh, Limpiyadhura, and Kalapani are integral parts of Nepal and raised diplomatic concerns over the proposed India-China Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage route through the disputed area.

Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that it has taken serious note of the proposed Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage route to be operated by India and China through Lipulekh, which Nepal claims as its territory. Responding to questions and concerns raised in various media outlets, the ministry said the Government of Nepal remains clear and firm on its position regarding the disputed area.

According to the ministry, Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh, and Kalapani — areas located east of the Mahakali River — have been integral parts of Nepal since the 1816 Treaty of Sugauli. Nepal has once again conveyed its official stance and concerns over the proposed pilgrimage route to both India and China through diplomatic channels.

The ministry also noted that Nepal has consistently urged India not to carry out activities such as road construction, border trade, or pilgrimage operations in the area. In addition, China has been officially informed that the Lipulekh region belongs to Nepal. Nepal reiterated its commitment to resolving border disputes with India through diplomatic means based on historical treaties, facts, maps, and evidence.
