Nepal, UK Discuss Early Resolution of Longstanding British Gurkha Grievances

Minister for Foreign Affairs Shisir Khanal held a virtual meeting with the United Kingdom’s Secretary of State for Defence, Dan Jarvis, on July 14, 2026, with discussions focused on the unresolved longstanding grievances of British Gurkhas. Khanal highlighted the important role of British Gurkhas in Nepal-UK relations and stressed the need to reach a mutually agreeable solution at the earliest possible time.

Khanal urged the British Government to consider the Gurkhas’ demands in light of their sacrifices and contributions, while expressing Nepal’s readiness to play a constructive and collaborative role in resolving the issue. Defence Secretary Jarvis described British Gurkhas as an integral part of the British Army and said resolving their grievances remained a priority for the UK Government.

Chief of the Europe Division Ganesh Prasad Dhakal and other senior officials from Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also attended the meeting. The virtual discussion was coordinated and facilitated by the British Embassy in Kathmandu.
