The Third Meeting of the Nepal-Australia Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) concluded in Kathmandu on July 24, 2026, with both countries reviewing the full range of bilateral relations and reaffirming their commitment to turn existing understandings into tangible outcomes. The meeting was co-chaired by Nepal’s Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai and Australia’s First Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia, Sarah Storey.

Discussions focused on strengthening high-level political engagement and cooperation in climate resilience, the green economy, water-resource management, agricultural research and development partnerships aligned with Nepal’s national priorities. The two sides also discussed expanding trade, air connectivity and tourism, attracting Australian investment in Nepal’s hydropower sector, and establishing a formal framework for cooperation in education and research. Migration and visa arrangements, diaspora engagement and possible sister-city relationships were also considered.

The two countries exchanged views on regional and international developments, human rights, carbon-trading frameworks and reciprocal support for candidacies in multilateral forums including the United Nations. The talks followed the first meeting of the Joint Nepal-Australia Trade and Investment Committee under the Trade and Investment Framework Arrangement (TIFA) held in Kathmandu a day earlier. The Nepal-Australia BCM was established in 2017, with its previous meetings held in Kathmandu in 2018 and Canberra in 2022.
