The Ministry of Health and Food Hygiene, through its Family Welfare Division, conducted the National Nutrition Screening Campaign from Baisakh 15 to 30, 2083, screening more than 1.061 million children under five years of age. Based on the results, a number of local levels were found to have comparatively high rates of wasting and severe wasting, indicating acute malnutrition. The Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration subsequently circulated the findings and instructions to the affected local governments.
The attached tables identify 17 local levels in Koshi Province, 109 in Madhesh, 2 in Bagmati, none listed in Gandaki, 9 in Karnali, 21 in Lumbini and 23 in Sudurpaschim. Some of the highest recorded figures include Koshi Rural Municipality in Sunsari with 34.5% wasting and 14.7% severe wasting, while several local levels in Madhesh also recorded wasting rates around or above 20%. The document therefore directs affected municipalities and rural municipalities to use available Multisector Nutrition Plan (MSNP) resources to identify, treat and manage malnourished children.
The government has also asked the listed local levels to prioritize nutrition-related activities in their own budgets, rather than relying solely on federal support. They are instructed to run social and behaviour change communication programmes, mobilize MSNP Nutrition Facilitators, strengthen community-level nutrition activities and ensure that children identified with acute malnutrition receive appropriate treatment and follow-up.
The move is intended to focus resources on areas where screening found the greatest nutrition risks and to ensure that local governments respond with targeted treatment, prevention and community awareness measures. The complete document includes province-wise lists showing wasting and severe-wasting rates for each identified local level.
