Severe flash floods in the Bhote Koshi River area on August 26, 2026 caused extensive loss of life, displacement and damage to houses, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and other critical infrastructure. In an update issued at 3:30 pm on August 28, the Government of Nepal said security agencies, disaster-management bodies, local authorities and health services remain fully mobilised for search and rescue, evacuation, emergency treatment and relief operations, while downstream flood risks continue to be monitored.

Authorities said 538 bodies have so far been recovered from affected river areas. Among 632 foreign nationals from 33 countries linked to the incident, 121 have been found and 511 remain missing, although the figures remain subject to verification. The largest groups still unaccounted for include 93 Indians, 84 Chinese, 66 Americans, 53 Ukrainians, 51 Malaysians, 35 Australians and 33 British nationals. All nine listed South Korean nationals, two Italians and one Swiss national have been found.

The government said saving lives and supporting rescue, evacuation and relief remain its immediate priorities. More than 18 Nepali and international media outlets were briefed on the response, with officials stating that Nepali security agencies are currently handling search and rescue operations and that international assistance will be sought where specialised expertise is required. A broader assessment will determine needs for rehabilitation and reconstruction. The government also stressed that Nepal remains open to international travellers and tourists, as only specific areas of the country have been affected.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Emergency Response Team continues to coordinate assistance for foreign nationals through its emergency hotline, WhatsApp and email, while the nearest Nepali diplomatic missions may also be contacted. Donations for rescue and relief efforts can be made through the official Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund.
