Summary:

Nepal has been elected Vice-Chair of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank’s Board of Governors for 2026–27, marking the country’s first appointment to the post and opening new prospects for infrastructure financing and cooperation.

Nepal has been elected Vice-Chair of the Board of Governors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) for 2026–27 during the bank’s 11th Annual Meeting held in Doha, Qatar, on September 28–29, 2026. Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle was elected to the post on Nepal’s behalf through the bank’s regional constituency. The Ministry of Finance said the selection reflects recognition of Nepal’s commitment as a founding member and its active cooperation with the international financial institution.

Speaking at the AIIB Governors’ Business Roundtable, Wagle stressed the importance of infrastructure investment in capital formation and sustainable economic growth. He highlighted roads, electricity, communications and information technology as major productive sectors requiring increased investment, while calling for AIIB financing to better match the needs of developing countries such as Nepal.

Wagle also emphasized attracting domestic and foreign private capital alongside development financing and ensuring viable returns on infrastructure projects. According to the ministry, Nepal’s first-ever election to the AIIB vice-chair position is expected to create opportunities for greater AIIB investment, technology transfer and institutional cooperation in the country’s major infrastructure projects.
