The Government of Nepal has announced the removal of 10 senior officials from the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and the Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC) under the Public Officeholders Removal Special Provisions Ordinance, 2083. According to a notice published by the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation on Baisakh 21, 2083 BS, the officials were automatically relieved of their positions pursuant to Section 2 of the ordinance. The decision affects senior leadership and governing body members of two major institutions responsible for electricity administration and regulation in Nepal.

At the Nepal Electricity Authority, five officials have been removed from their respective positions. They include Executive Director Hitendra Dev Shakya and four members of the Board of Directors: Ratan Bahadur Air, Dr. Bal Bahadur Parajuli, Shyam Kishor Yadav and Rohit Paudel. The notice confirms that all five officials ceased holding their designated positions under the provisions of the ordinance.

Similarly, the Electricity Regulatory Commission has been affected by the removal of its chairman and four members. The officials named are Chairman Dr. Ram Prasad Dhital, along with Dr. Madhusudhan Adhikari, Dr. Jhamak Prasad Sharma, Gautam Dangol and Bhagirathi Bhattarai Gyawali. Their removal covers the commission’s listed leadership positions, which carry responsibilities related to electricity sector regulation and oversight.

The notice, issued by Joint Secretary and Spokesperson Sandeep Kumar Dev, formally confirms the officials’ automatic removal under the ordinance. However, it does not specify individual reasons for their removal, announce replacement appointments or provide a timeline for filling the vacant positions. The announcement represents a significant leadership change across Nepal’s electricity administration and regulatory institutions.
