Summary:

The Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection has issued an urgent warning to businesses against selling substandard, adulterated and counterfeit products through physical and digital platforms, emphasizing strict enforcement of consumer protection laws.

The Government of Nepal has issued an urgent notice warning manufacturers, importers, suppliers, distributors and retailers against illegal and deceptive trading practices involving essential consumer goods. In a notice dated Shrawan 4, 2083 BS, the Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection under the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies expressed serious concern over reports of unlabelled, substandard and adulterated food products, as well as counterfeit and repackaged daily necessities, food items and beverages being sold in the market. The department stated that such products were reportedly being distributed through both physical markets and digital platforms, raising concerns about consumer safety and unfair commercial practices.

Citing the Consumer Protection Act, 2075, and Consumer Protection Regulations, 2076, the department emphasized that consumers have the legal right to receive quality goods and services and that practices violating these rights are punishable under existing laws. It instructed all concerned businesses to strictly comply with legal responsibilities and regulatory requirements when manufacturing, importing, distributing and selling goods. The department warned that businesses found violating consumer protection provisions would face strict legal action, and details of enforcement measures would be made public where applicable. The notice reinforces the government’s efforts to protect consumers from unsafe products, misleading commercial activities and unlawful trading practices.
