The Government of Nepal has issued an urgent public notice warning manufacturers, suppliers, importers, distributors and retailers against illegal and deceptive trading practices. In a notice dated Shrawan 1, 2083 BS, the Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection under the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies expressed serious concern over reports of counterfeit labels, unauthorized repackaging and the sale of expired products. The department stated that incidents involving the sale of goods through physical outlets and online platforms, including products with altered labels or packaging, had been reported through various sources.
Citing the Consumer Protection Act, 2075, the department emphasized that Section 6 requires manufacturers to properly label their products, while Section 8 obliges importers to fulfil prescribed legal requirements. It also highlighted Section 11, which prohibits the sale and distribution of goods and services through unfair and deceptive trade practices and protects consumers against unsafe products. The department warned that distributing products in violation of these requirements undermines consumer rights and public confidence in the market.
The department has directed all concerned businesses to comply with legal labelling requirements, avoid unauthorized packaging changes and refrain from selling expired or otherwise illegal products. It cautioned that violations would invite strict action under prevailing laws, with information about offenders and enforcement measures made public where applicable. The notice reinforces the government’s commitment to consumer safety, fair trading practices and accountability in Nepal’s marketplace.
