Nepal Orders Local Governments to Report Progress on Food Systems Transformation

Share

Summary:

The federal government has asked all municipalities and rural municipalities to submit detailed records of their initiatives, achievements and planned actions under Nepal’s Food Systems Transformation Strategic Plan.

The Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration, acting on a request from the National Planning Commission, has directed all local governments to provide information on efforts and achievements related to food systems transformation. The move is part of Nepal’s implementation of the national Food Systems Transformation Strategic Plan, which is intended to support progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

According to the National Planning Commission’s communication, the strategy covers the food system from production to consumption, including nutrition and food safety, agricultural infrastructure, agricultural value chains and climate-friendly farming systems. The document identifies food systems transformation as an important “accelerator” for advancing Nepal’s SDG implementation.

Local governments have been asked to report their major achievements, activities and implementation status using a standardized format attached to the notice. The reporting template seeks information such as the location of the initiative, expenditure or investment, key achievements, implementation status and other relevant details, while also allowing local levels to report ongoing or planned measures.

The information collected from municipalities and rural municipalities will be consolidated and forwarded to the National Planning Commission Secretariat, helping the government track progress, identify local innovations and coordinate implementation of the national food systems transformation agenda across all levels of government.
