The National Planning Commission (NPC) reviewed the preliminary results of the National Nutrition Assessment 2082/83, conducted by the Ministry of Health and Food Hygiene through its Family Welfare Division from Baisakh 15 to Baisakh 30, 2083. The findings were presented and discussed at an NPC meeting on 2083/03/08, after which the commission issued decisions aimed at improving nutrition outcomes, particularly in provinces and local levels where key nutrition indicators were found to be comparatively weak.
The meeting called for targeted programmes to address stunting, wasting and other forms of child malnutrition, including measures to ensure appropriate treatment for children suffering from severe acute malnutrition and interventions to improve the nutritional status of affected children. The Health Ministry was asked to prepare and implement programmes in line with the assessment findings, with greater attention to areas showing poorer nutrition indicators.
Recognizing that local governments have constitutional responsibilities for basic health and sanitation, drinking water, agriculture and food production management, the NPC directed that local levels include nutrition-specific, nutrition-sensitive and social and behaviour change activities in their upcoming plans and programmes with adequate budget allocations. The Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration subsequently circulated the decision to all municipalities and rural municipalities for implementation.
The decision also asks the Health Ministry to coordinate with development partners and supporting organizations so that financial and technical assistance for nutrition programmes is aligned and does not duplicate existing activities. The overall approach is intended to use the assessment findings to guide more targeted, coordinated and locally funded action against malnutrition.
