Nepal Urges Ukraine to Release Detained Nepali Nationals Held as Prisoners of War (POWs)

Nepal’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shisir Khanal, held a telephone conversation with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, discussing bilateral relations and the issue of Nepali nationals detained in Ukraine as Prisoners of War (POWs).

During the discussion, Minister Khanal informed the Ukrainian side that Nepal does not permit its citizens to serve in foreign armies except in countries with longstanding military agreements with Nepal. He strongly urged the Ukrainian government to release and repatriate the nine detained Nepali citizens on humanitarian grounds. In response, Minister Sybiha assured that Ukraine remains open to discussions on the matter.

The Ukrainian Foreign Minister also congratulated Minister Khanal on assuming office and extended best wishes for his successful tenure. Both sides expressed satisfaction over the friendly relations between Nepal and Ukraine and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in areas such as agriculture, tourism, and education.
