The first meeting of the Nepal–Romania Bilateral Consultation Mechanism (BCM) was held at the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bucharest on 4 May 2026. The Nepali delegation was led by Joint Secretary and Head of Europe Division Ganesh Prasad Dhakal, while the Romanian side was led by Acting Director General Diana Tase.

During the meeting, both sides discussed various aspects of Nepal–Romania relations, including economic cooperation, labour and consular matters, people-to-people exchanges and multilateral collaboration. They also explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in sectors such as energy, agriculture, tourism, information technology, education and culture.

Nepal requested Romania to consider opening a diplomatic mission in Kathmandu, while the Romanian side emphasized the importance of Nepal opening its diplomatic mission in Romania, noting that Nepalis are currently the largest non-EU migrant worker community in the country. According to the statement, more than 55,000 Nepalis are estimated to be working in Romania in different professions.

Prior to the meeting, Nepal and Romania signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formally establish the Bilateral Consultation Mechanism. The MoU was signed by Joint Secretary Dhakal and Romanian Secretary of State Ana Cristina Tinca.
