Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal has concluded a four-day official visit to China, describing the trip as a significant step toward deepening Nepal-China relations and expanding cooperation across a wide range of sectors. The visit took place from 14 to 17 June 2026 at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
During bilateral talks in Beijing, the two sides reviewed all aspects of Nepal-China relations and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation based on friendship, mutual respect and shared interests. Nepal reiterated its commitment to the One China Policy and assured that Nepali territory would not be used against China’s interests. In return, China reaffirmed its support for Nepal’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and development priorities.
Discussions focused on expanding cooperation in infrastructure development, connectivity, border management, energy, trade, investment, agriculture, technology transfer, information technology, digitalization, tourism, chemical fertilizers, petroleum and natural gas exploration, as well as people-to-people exchanges. Both sides also agreed to accelerate the implementation of previously agreed bilateral projects and enhance coordination in regional and multilateral forums.
As part of the visit, Minister Khanal met several senior Chinese leaders, including Wang Yi, Liu Haixing of the Communist Party of China’s International Department, and Wang Huning, Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. He also participated in an Investment Conference organized by the Embassy of Nepal in Beijing, where he encouraged Chinese businesses to invest in Nepal and highlighted the country’s economic potential and investment-friendly policies.
The minister additionally met members of the Nepali community in China, visited the historic White Dagoba (Araniko Stupa) in Beijing, and toured leading Chinese scientific and innovation institutions, including the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Zhongguancun Science Park, China’s premier technology and innovation hub.
According to Minister Khanal, the visit helped reinforce Nepal’s independent and pragmatic foreign policy, strengthen economic and development diplomacy, and create new opportunities for expanded cooperation and investment between Nepal and China.
