The Ministry of Home Affairs has issued a press release regarding the arrest of a youth accused of making insulting and abusive remarks against the Prime Minister on social media. According to the ministry, the youth was arrested on 2082 Chaitra 28 by police investigating a cyber-related offence.
The ministry stated that after the Home Minister learned about the matter, he immediately instructed authorities to release the youth. The case had been under investigation with permission from the concerned district court, but the person was released on 2082 Chaitra 29 following the decision of the district attorney.
The ministry said the government fully respects citizens’ constitutional rights to freedom of expression and press freedom. However, it urged citizens to express opinions in a factual, dignified and responsible manner, warning that abusive, uncivil and defamatory expressions on social media may fall under legal action. The ministry also appealed to all citizens to use social media responsibly while reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting fundamental rights.
