Nepal participated in the Commemorative High-Level Meeting marking the 65th anniversary of the first Conference of Heads of State and Government of Non-Aligned Countries in Belgrade on September 1, 2026. Nepal’s delegation was led by Krishna Prasad Dhakal, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who described the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) as an important guide for navigating an increasingly complex international environment marked by multiple crises.

Dhakal said growing conflicts, geopolitical tensions, polarization and fragmentation have created a need to renew and revitalize NAM. He stressed that Nepal continues to see the movement as an important platform for addressing challenges such as the global arms race, economic disparities and digital divides. He called on member states to remain united around NAM principles, strengthen multilateralism and uphold international law to help build a more equitable, sustainable and peaceful world.

The meeting brought together heads of state and government, foreign ministers and senior representatives from NAM countries to reflect on the movement’s history and future role in global governance. During the event, Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric expressed condolences and solidarity with Nepal following the recent devastating floods, extending sympathies to affected families.

On the sidelines, Dhakal held separate meetings with Angola’s External Relations Minister Téte António and Saudi Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Waleed A. M. Elkhereiji to discuss bilateral and multilateral cooperation. He also met Serbian agriculture ministry adviser Andrej Cvijanović to explore stronger Nepal–Serbia cooperation, particularly in agriculture and forestry. Dhakal also attended an official dinner hosted by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.
