The Government of Nepal has called on local governments across the country to organize programmes marking the 47th World Tourism Day on September 27, 2026 (Ashoj 11, 2083 BS), emphasizing digital innovation and artificial intelligence in tourism development. According to a circular issued by the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration on Ashoj 8, 2083 BS, the directive follows correspondence from the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation. This year’s celebrations were organized under the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism,” highlighting the potential role of emerging technologies in transforming Nepal’s tourism industry.
The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation stated that World Tourism Day is celebrated annually on September 27 through various activities to recognize the importance of tourism. For the 2026 celebration, the ministry decided to coordinate with tourism-related associations, provincial governments and local authorities to organize programmes across the country. The directive requested all local governments to participate collectively in the celebrations, bringing together relevant stakeholders to commemorate the occasion and promote cooperation within the tourism sector.
The circular instructed all municipalities and rural municipalities to undertake the necessary coordination and facilitation in accordance with the Tourism Ministry’s decision. The Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration forwarded the instructions to local authorities and requested them to take appropriate action. The ministry also directed its Information Technology Section to circulate the communication electronically to local governments and publish the notice on its official website to ensure wider dissemination. The documents emphasize coordinated participation rather than prescribing specific events, budgets or mandatory activities for individual local governments.
The focus on digital technology and artificial intelligence reflects the government’s interest in linking tourism development with technological advancement. Digital platforms, data-driven tourism services and artificial intelligence could support destination promotion, visitor information and tourism management, although the circular does not announce any specific technology projects or funding commitments. The nationwide coordination initiative aims to encourage participation in World Tourism Day while drawing attention to digital innovation as an area of opportunity for Nepal’s tourism sector.
