The Government of Nepal has responded to growing concerns over the availability of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) after reports circulated through various channels suggesting a shortage of cooking gas in the market. In a press release issued on Shrawan 19, 2083 BS, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies acknowledged that LPG demand had increased compared with the corresponding period of the previous year. However, the ministry stated that regular LPG distribution had been underway since the beginning of Shrawan 2083 BS, with imports being increased to meet demand. It also confirmed that additional coordination was being undertaken to strengthen supply and distribution, while Nepal Oil Corporation and the ministry continued discussions with relevant stakeholders to secure uninterrupted imports.
The ministry urged consumers not to panic or purchase LPG cylinders unnecessarily, stating that the reported temporary shortage was expected to ease within a few days. It instructed Nepal Oil Corporation, gas distributors, dealers and retailers to ensure the immediate availability of cooking gas, particularly for consumers who had been unable to obtain cylinders. The government also emphasized the importance of maintaining transparent and effective LPG imports, storage and distribution, including measures to prevent supply disruptions and improve coordination among concerned agencies.
The ministry issued a strong warning against artificial shortages, hoarding, black marketing and violations of existing supply regulations, stating that individuals or organizations involved in such activities would face strict legal action. It also called on the private sector, consumer rights organizations, journalists, public representatives, government agencies and consumers to cooperate in maintaining a smooth supply of cooking gas. While the press release reassures the public about ongoing supply arrangements, it does not provide specific LPG stock figures, import volumes or a confirmed date for complete normalization of distribution.
