Summary:

The World Trade Organization has invited government nominations for its 2027 French-Irish Mission Programme and Netherlands Talent Programme, offering eligible officials up to 10 months of practical training in Geneva, Switzerland, with a monthly allowance of CHF 5,000 and travel expenses.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has invited Nepal to nominate qualified government officials for its WTO-Funded Long-Term Placement Programmes 2027, comprising the French-Irish Mission Programme (FIMiP) and the Netherlands Talent Programme (NTP). According to a communication issued by the WTO Secretariat on June 24, 2026, and forwarded by Nepal’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, the programmes aim to strengthen trade policy expertise and institutional capacity in developing countries, least-developed countries and other eligible economies. Selected participants are expected to begin their placements in March 2027, with both programmes offering practical exposure to WTO operations, international trade negotiations and multilateral trade policy development.

The programmes primarily target mid-level government officials with at least five years of experience working on WTO-related matters, typically between 30 and 45 years of age. Under the Netherlands Talent Programme, selected officials will work directly with the WTO Secretariat, contributing to trade policy analysis, negotiations, needs assessments and other technical activities. Meanwhile, participants in the French-Irish Mission Programme will be placed at their countries’ Permanent Missions in Geneva, where they may assist with WTO meetings, negotiations, documentation and policy reporting. Both programmes provide a monthly lump-sum allowance of CHF 5,000, along with travel expenses, for placements lasting up to 10 months. The Netherlands Talent Programme may also include a study visit to the Netherlands.

Interested candidates must submit electronic applications containing a complete curriculum vitae, motivation letter, proposed work assignments, a short biography and official government nomination or support letters. Applicants for the French-Irish Mission Programme additionally require a support letter from their country’s Permanent Mission in Geneva. The WTO has specified that each eligible member or observer may submit a maximum of four applications across the two programmes. Candidates who have completed the WTO’s Advanced Trade Policy Course, Regional Trade Policy Course or other relevant training may receive priority during selection. The WTO’s official application deadline was August 31, 2026, while Nepal’s Permanent Mission requested the concerned authorities to forward nominations and supporting documents by Bhadra 15, 2083 BS.

The WTO will select candidates through its designated selection committee, considering professional qualifications, relevant training, experience, regional representation and gender balance. Selected participants will be required to submit monthly progress reports and a final evaluation of their activities. The initiative is intended to strengthen Nepal’s capacity to participate effectively in international trade negotiations, implement WTO commitments and formulate evidence-based trade policies. The documents concern nominations and selection opportunities; they do not confirm that any Nepali officials have been selected.
