A devastating avalanche on Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain, has killed renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja “Nims Dai” and other members of an international expedition team. According to Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the avalanche struck on July 30, 2026, at an altitude of around 6,600 metres while the climbers were travelling from Camp II toward Camp III.

The ministry identified the Nepali climbers who died as Nirmal Purja, Pur Bahadur Gurung “Yukta”, Kili Pemba Sherpa “Kilu”, Nima Sherpa, Nawang Thindu Sherpa and Gyalu Sherpa, along with members of the international team climbing Broad Peak with them. The government described the tragedy as an irreparable loss to the mountaineering community.

Search and rescue operations were intensified by Pakistani authorities and Nepali climbing teams immediately after reports emerged that the expedition had gone missing. The ministry praised the courage of the Pakistani and Nepali mountaineers involved in the difficult high-altitude operation. The bodies of Pur Bahadur Gurung and Gyalu Sherpa have already been brought down from the accident site, while efforts are continuing to recover the remaining bodies.

The Embassy of Nepal in Islamabad is facilitating arrangements to repatriate the bodies of the Nepali climbers. The Government of Nepal and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have paid tribute to the deceased mountaineers and extended deep condolences to their bereaved families.
