A taskforce formed by Nepal’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has recommended increasing the monthly living allowance provided to MBBS and BDS intern doctors across the country. The committee was formed to study the condition of compulsory one-year medical internships and review whether intern doctors are receiving fair financial support while working in hospitals and medical institutions.
According to the report, intern doctors actively contribute to healthcare services during their training period, yet there has been a large variation in stipend distribution among universities, medical colleges, and teaching hospitals. The taskforce found that some institutions provide inadequate allowances despite interns being involved in regular hospital duties and patient care. The report also reviewed labor laws, previous committee recommendations, and practices followed by different health institutions.
The taskforce has recommended that MBBS and BDS intern doctors should receive a monthly allowance equivalent to at least 50% of the basic salary of an 8th-level Medical Officer under the Nepal government health service. It also suggested making necessary amendments to medical education regulations and ensuring coordinated implementation among universities, hospitals, and related government bodies to maintain uniformity in stipend distribution nationwide.
