Nepal Raises Gurkha Pension Issue in High-Level UK Defence Talks

Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal held a virtual meeting today with the UK Secretary of State for Defence Rt. Hon. John Healey and Minister for Veterans and People Hon. Louise Sandher-Jones MP, focusing on long-standing issues related to British Gurkha veterans, particularly the demand for proportionate pensions and resolution of grievances.

During the discussion, Minister Khanal highlighted the important role of British Gurkhas in Nepal–UK relations and urged the UK government to address their concerns at the earliest possible time, stressing principles of justice, fairness and respect.

The British side, represented by Minister Louise Sandher-Jones, reaffirmed commitment to continue working closely with Nepal to address the issues faced by Gurkha veterans. The meeting also included senior officials from both governments as well as representatives of Gurkha organizations.

Earlier in the day, Minister Khanal also held a separate virtual interaction with Gurkha veterans based in the UK. The meeting was facilitated by the Embassy of Nepal in London and attended by senior officials from both sides, including members of the UK Parliament and defence ministry representatives.
